This Week's Featured Art Work - Kate Cusick - July 26, 2009

Kate Cusick's Sumac Street, in Still Point Art Gallery's Dwellings exhibition, is a slice of suburbia, Practically Anywhere, USA. Looking like the street on which I grew up in the 1960s and '70s, the houses have attached garages, manicured lawns, straight sidewalks, and uninteresting shrubbery. There are no people. There seems to be no life, except for the green grass and a few green shrubs. The piece is somehow mesmerizing with its various shades of green, clean lines, and use of perspective. Spend time with this piece and you see that it is at once calming and disconcerting, inviting and off-putting, simple and complex. There is so much more here than meets the eye. This is one of my favorite pieces in the show.

Sumac Street is a digital art print, 17" by 10", available from Still Point Art Gallery for $300. Contact Christine Cote by email or by phone 207.837.5760. Kate currently has three additional pieces in the Gallery - Memorial Drive, Near Parker High, and Pontiac Early April.
